EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS: A Non-Surgical Approach To Reduce Back Pain
Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs) are a common treatment option for many forms of pain. This non surgical treatment method can be used to help relieve pain in the neck, low back, arm and leg. ESIs are performed to alleviate pain caused by spinal stenosis, sciatica, spondylosis, or disc herniation. The goal is pain relief so that patients may resume their normal activities.
An Epidural Steroid Injection consists of a long lasting corticosteroid and an anesthetic. The medications are delivered directly into the epidural space of the spine. The effects of Epidural Steroid Injections are usually temporary and vary. ESIs have proven to be helpful to some patients, and are commonly used in combination with a comprehensive rehabilitation program such as Physical Therapy. The success of the injection can also help to determine whether surgery might be beneficial for pain associated with a herniated disc.
